During the 1920s, a number of improvements were introduced. After several experiments and failed applications, London Transport finally got permission from the Metropolitan Police to operate buses with covered tops in 1926.

Permission had to be sought as it was feared that covering buses would make them too top-heavy and they would become dangerous for both passengers and other road users. Passengers also enjoyed a smoother, more comfortable ride after 1928, when London Transport started to replace solid wheels with pneumatic tyres.
