London's first regular bus service was started by George Shillibeer (1797-1866) on 4 July 1829. It ran from Paddington to Bank and was called the omnibus, which means "for all" in Latin.

The box-shaped horse-drawn coach had a one-shilling through fare which was considered quite expensive. A large proportion of the running costs went to the upkeep of the horses. They were expensive to buy and, like petrol today, the price of horse feed fluctuated.
