Transport for London

Docklands Light Railway

DLR train Docklands Light Railway Limited (DLRL) is the organisation that owns the railway's assets. Part of TfL, its role is to oversee the operation of the railway and plan development that meets the needs of east London.

DLR is one of Britain's great transport success stories, now carrying almost 70 million passengers a year and achieving consistently high levels of reliability and passenger satisfaction.

One of the first light rail systems in Britain, with one of the world's most advanced automatic train control systems, the DLR has expanded faster than any other UK railway.

The railway continues to grow. A new extension to Woolwich Arsenal opened in January 2009 and a further  extension is due to open in summer 2010.

Work to upgrade the DLR network to accommodate three-carriage trains is also underway. These longer trains will run on the busy Bank-Lewisham route from early 2010.

The railway will play a crucial role in the success of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, serving four competition venues: the Olympic Park, ExCel London, Greenwich Park and the Woolwich Royal Artillery Barracks.

DLR works with franchise operator Serco Docklands and three concessionaires - responsible for building and maintaining network extensions - to deliver a safe, reliable and cost effective service for east London residents, commuters and visitors.
