Blackfriars Tube reopens

21 February 2012

An improved Blackfriars Underground station has reopened as part of the Tube upgrade plan.

Circle and District line trains are now stopping at the station and there are better connections to rail services.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson, who toured the station, said: 'With its magnificent ticket hall, brand new lifts and escalators, and more than double the previous capacity, the rebirth of this central London station will improve the journeys of thousands of passengers every single day.

'An incredible amount of hard work and expertise has been invested in these improvements, and Blackfriars is now set to become a truly world-class station.'

An additional 40,000 passengers will pass through the Tube station every day, following a huge increase to services at Blackfriars National Rail.

The three-year redevelopment by Network Rail will eventually triple the number of trains that run through Blackfriars and central London each hour.

A new South Bank entrance is already in place, added to the station in December, with a further two rail platforms planned to open in May.
