A Charge-Free Christmas

The Mayor of London Ken Livingstone today announced an early Christmas present to Londoners by starting proceedings that could result in the suspension of the congestion charge between Christmas and the New Year.

Transport for London has launched a five-week public consultation to suspend the congestion charge for the three working days between Christmas and the New Year.

After analysing congestion levels in the charging zone during the same period last year, and listening to the views of Londoners and businesses, the Mayor asked TfL to consult on suspending the charge.

Ken Livingstone, said:

"I am honouring my manifesto commitment to suspend the congestion charge between Christmas and the New Year.

"As the post-Christmas sales usually start on Boxing Day, shoppers, businesses and residents will all benefit."

To make these changes, TfL is legally obliged to hold a public consultation. The entire process will take a number of months to complete and will require some changes to be made to the Capita IT systems. Those persons who have purchased an annual payment that covers this period will have their expiry date extended by three days.
