London-wide travel awareness campaign launched

Open House - open station
Transport for London (TfL) is once again giving the public the chance to see some of the network's architectural treasures as part of London's Open House weekend, September 18-19.

Every year TfL participates in this celebration of the capital's architecture in which more than 500 buildings - many of which are not usually open to the public - open their doors to visitors.

TfL openings are in limited guided tours, booked in advance by emailing seppe.embrechts@tube.tfl.gov.uk. This year's tours include:

55 Broadway London Underground HQ - A Portland stone faced cruciform building, decorated with sculptures by famous contemporary artists the building was designed by Charles Holden through1927-9. Entry is through the ground floor reception and the tour includes the 7th floor, and the 10th floor balcony restaurant. Tube: St James's Park. Bus: 11, 24, 211.

Hounslow Station tours
are on Sunday at: 1100, 1230, 1400, 1530. The tour includes Hounslow West, built in 1931 by Charles Holden, Hounslow East, recently reconstructed by Acanthus LW Architects, and Hounslow Central built in 1912 building by Harry Ford.
The meeting point is the ticket hall Hounslow West Station, Bath Road TW3. All visitors must have a valid travel permit as they will be travelling by tube from Hounslow West to Hounslow Central and Hounslow East. Bus: 81, 203, 222.

Highgate Station tours
are on Saturday at: 1100, 1200, 1400, 1500, 1600. The station was opened in 1941 with the 'High Level' station reconstructured for the proposed Northern Line extension to Alexandra Place over Northern Heights route, which was later cancelled.
All public areas plus access to the old 'High Level' station will be covered on the tour and the meeting point is the ticket hall, Highgate Station, Archway Road N6. Tube: Highgate. Buses: 43, 134, 263, 603.

Loughton Station and disused signal cabin tours
are available on Sunday at: 1000, 1130, 1400, 1530. Designed by John Murray Easton in 1939, this is an impressive station that shows an imaginative use of brick and concrete. Entry is through the ticket hall and the tour includes platforms, disused signal cabin. All visitors must have a valid travel permit. Tube: Loughton. Bus: 20, 167, 204, 210, 214

Kingsway Tram Subway tours are on Saturday and Sunday but are already fully booked. Built in 1906, this was formerly the link between the northern and southern sections of the London's tram, disused since 1951. This has been organised in association with London Borough of Camden.
For those who have secured a tour place, the meeting point is at Holborn Underground Station in the ticket hall. Tube: Holborn. Bus: 1, 8, 19, 25, 55, 59, 68, 91 168, 171, 188, 242, 243.
