Finsbury Park: TfL begins work on Wells Terrace bus station - 04 January to 31 March 2005
Wells Terrace Bus Station is to undergo major development works to improve passenger waiting areas and bus stop facilities. The next phase of improvements to the station environment at Finsbury Park is part of the £7.66m Finsbury Park Transport Interchange (FPTI) project, part-funded by Transport for London's (TfL) £10bn 5 Year Investment Programme.
Commencing 4th January 2005, the upgrade of bus station facilities will include:
- Replacing the bus canopy over Wells Terrace and installing better sheltering in passenger waiting areas whilst also improving the dispersion of exhaust fumes;
- Pigeon proofing and lighting the under-bridges at Seven Sisters and Stroud Green Roads`;
- The installation of more CCTV cameras and improved lighting creating better personal safety and security in and around the bus stations.
The works are being carried out by TfL in partnership with the London Boroughs of Islington and Haringey and the Finsbury Park Partnership and are due to be completed by 31st March 2005.
Changes to parking arrangements and Wells Terrace bus services
Though disruption will be kept to a minimum the following temporary changes to parking and traffic flow are vital in order to maintain bus services to and from the station:
- All parking on Morris Place will be suspended from 04 January 2005 to 31 March 2005;
- Morris Place will temporarily become a one-way street eastbound (i.e. vehicles will not be allowed to turn into Morris Place from Stroud Green Road). This temporary one-way system will be in operation between 04 January 2005 and 31 March 2005.
Local residents planning to go away over the Christmas period should note that cars parked on Morris Place after 03 January 2005 will have to be removed.
Changes to bus services from Wells Terrace Bus Station will be as follows:
From 4 to 18 January
After 18 January
Finsbury Park Transport Interchange (FPTI) project
Since the summer of 2002, TfL has successfully lead the diverse FPTI working group in the delivery of improvements to the station environment.
TfL has provided £1. 73m of project funding to date contributing to the FPTI provision of better access to buses, safer pedestrian crossings, new facilities for cyclists, a new taxi rank, a passenger drop-off point and new bus set-down bays. TfL's total contribution to the initiative will be £6.375m.
The FPTI project is a joint initiative undertaken by TfL, the Finsbury Park Partnership, Islington and Haringey councils and the Heritage Lottery Fund with support from the SRA, Network Rail and WAGN.
In addition to the Wells Terrace works, construction is underway on a state-of-the-art cycle park, providing secure staffed parking for 125 bicycles.
The largest cycle facility in central London, the park will have smartcard access, later planned to be compatible with Oystercard. The new facility will be located on Stroud Green Road providing a new entrance to Finsbury Park as well as a link to the London Cycle Network. Construction began in September 2004 and is expected to be completed by the end of March 2005.
TfL Interchange Programme
TfL's Interchange Programme is part of Transport for London and the Mayor's commitment to improving the quality, security, convenience and accessibility of transport services for London residents and visitors.
TfL is committed to the funding and co-ordination of a range of interchange improvement projects. The FPTI improvements will contribute to increasing the efficiency of London's transport network, attract more passengers and improve the quality of their journeys.
