Recent surveys carried out by London Buses have revealed that 27 million night bus passenger trips were taken in the past year (03/04)- that's up by 82 per cent from 2000/01.
Night bus passenger numbers are being boosted by increases in both leisure travellers and those using services to travel to and from work
London Buses, Director of Performance, Clare Kavanagh said:
" These figures are quite amazing, the London bus revolution is clearly driving the Capitals growth as a 24 hour city.
"Night buses have seen a number of major improvements over the last four years and so have become more attractive to everyone as a reliable way go get home. Four out of five buses now have CCTV, reliability is at an all time high and night buses are more frequent than ever."
Since 2000 43 more night bus routes have been added to the network.
- The London bus network is one of the largest and most comprehensive urban systems in the world. Each weekday 8,000 London buses carry 6 million passengers on over 700 different routes.
- Bus use is up by 11 per cent over the past year (03/04) - an extra 168 million passenger trips;
- The number of passengers using buses is at its highest level since 1968;
- Patronage is rising at its fastest rate since the Second World War;
- Night bus use is up by 29 per cent over the past year; and
- London Buses is running the highest volume of service on London's roads than at any time since 1957.
