Transport for London

TfL statement on Associated Newspapers Ltd

02 March 2006

TfL statement regarding the Associated Newspapers Ltd relinquishing exclusive rights to all day newspaper distribution on London Underground.

This is good news for London as additional revenues generated by any new contract will contribute to the upgrade of London's transport system

A spokesperson said: "We welcome the news that the publisher of the Metro free newspaper has agreed to unconditionally give up its exclusive rights to the afternoon and evening free paper distribution slots on the Tube network.

"Subject to receiving confirmation of the terms of the agreement, TfL expects to proceed with a formal tender for an opportunity that has already generated a significant amount of interest from publishers.

"This is good news for London as additional revenues generated by any new contract will contribute to the upgrade of London's transport system being carried through by TfL's £10bn 5-Year Investment Programme."
