15 July 2008

Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has relaxed regulations on red routes to allow cabs to stop near cash machines. The move will mean passengers can use ATMs more safely at night.

People will be able to withdraw cash late at night...secure in the knowledge that their cab is waiting close by

Licensed taxis and private hire vehicles, with appropriate signage, can stop on red routes between 22:00 and 6:00, while passengers withdraw money to pay for their fare.

The change, being piloted for six months, means drivers can stop for up to five minutes.

'People will be able to withdraw cash late at night...secure in the knowledge that their cab is waiting close by,' explained The Mayor.

'Transport for London will also be encouraging more taxi firms to accept credit and debit cards to make it easier and safer for passengers to pay their fare.'
