Acton Town improvements

Works to refurbish Acton Town station and to install customer lifts are well underway.

To speed things up, the station is open for interchange only between the District and Piccadilly lines on a number of weekends as follows:

On these weekends the ticket office will also be closed.

A replacement bus service will run between Acton Town and Ealing Common stations for the District and Piccadilly lines, during the weekend closures.

The station will be open as normal on Sunday August 10 for the London Mela taking place at Gunnersbury Park.

Mayor scraps £25 charge

Mayor of London Boris Johnson has scrapped proposals to charge owners of large family cars £25 to drive in the Congestion Charging Zone.

He has also scrapped proposals which would have allowed some low emission cars to drive in the Zone for free.

Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, said: 'My commitment to making the Congestion Charge fairer and more effective for Londoners is well known.

'I am delighted that we have been able to scrap the £25 charge, which would have hit families and small businesses hardest.

'I believe the proposal would actually have made congestion worse by allowing thousands of small cars in for free.'

The decision by the Mayor means that the discount for alternative fuel vehicles will remain in place and the existing Congestion Charge is unaffected.

Appreciating with age

London's Capital Age free festival takes place tomorrow from 13:00 to 17:00 at the Royal Festival Hall.

Open to people of all ages, the arts event is the largest and liveliest to celebrate the city's older residents.

Among the attractions will be performances from tap legend Will Gaines and 'Jamaica's first lady of song' Totlyn Jackson.
