Ditch the car this weekend

10 July 2008

Daredevil bicycle displays, an obstacle course and a personal fitness MOT are among the attractions at Sutton's 'Move it at the Manor' festival, this Sunday.

We hope that Move it at the Manor will inspire even more people

Ben Plowden, Director of the Smarter Travel Unit at TfL

The family-friendly event is designed to promote active lifestyles, healthy living and demonstrate the benefits of becoming less reliant on cars.

Organised by Smarter Travel Sutton and Transport for London (TfL), it all kicks-off in Manor Park at noon.

Ben Plowden, Director of the Smarter Travel Unit at TfL, said: 'Smarter Travel Sutton is helping people across the borough to change the way they travel, whether they are cycling to work, walking the school run or using public transport for a day out.

'We hope that Move it at the Manor will inspire even more people to swap their cars for healthier, cheaper and more environmentally friendly ways of travelling around.'

On the day, a bike, an iPod and cinema vouchers for children are among many prizes up for grabs.

Visitors can also enjoy live music, street performers, arts and crafts, a petting zoo, and a kids' zone with face painting.

They can also hear local station Radio Jackie broadcasting direct from the festival.

For cycling enthusiasts there will be a guided bike ride, safety advice from the Bike Doctor, free security marking, and even a chance to personalise their ride with the help of Brixton Bike Art.

Activities in Manor Park will finish at 17:30, but music will continue at the nearby Millennium Gardens.

Organisers are encouraging people to walk, cycle or take a bus to the event, and cyclists will find bike mock-up areas within Manor Park.
