Transport for London

LEZ phase two now underway

07 July 2008

Phase Two of London's Low Emission Zone (LEZ) started this morning. Now, lorries weighing more than 3.5 tonnes, buses and coaches are all required to meet the emissions standards of the Zone or face a £200 daily charge.

London has the worst air quality in the UK.

Poor air quality causes the premature death of an estimated 1,000 people in the Capital every year.

The Zone aims to cut emissions that are harmful to human health by targeting the largest, most polluting diesel-engined vehicles.

The first phase of the LEZ, which applies to lorries over 12 tonnes, started in February.

Vehicles affected by it must meet the Euro III standard for particulate matter, if they wish to continue to drive within the Zone without paying the charge.

Owners and operators of vehicles that do not meet with the emissions standards, are given a 28-day warning period in which to comply.

This applies from the date they are first seen driving within the Zone.

Further information, including details of the Zone's boundary, is available at tfl.gov.uk/lezlondon or by calling 0845 607 0009
