Proms go Underground
Passengers will be treated to a live BBC Proms concert at Leicester Square Tube station today when a viola quartet from the BBC Symphony Orchestra will perform
between 13:00 and 14:00.
The short recital is part of the BBC Proms Out+About project where, for one day only, some of London's finest musicians serenade new audiences with free live music in unusual locations across the Capital.
The classical viola players will be taking over one of the busking pitches at the station.
Working to beat the heat
London Underground has announced measures to lower temperatures on the Tube this summer.
The heat-busting innovations include:
- Restoring 50 ventilation fans across the Underground network
- Installing 40 large caged fans at key stations, and trialling ceiling-mounted fans at two stations on the Bakerloo line
- Upgrading ventilation shafts on the Victoria line
- Using a 'mechanical chiller unit', like one in operation at Oxford Circus, to cool customers in the ticket hall at Euston this year
- Established a dedicated 'Cool the Tube' project team, who are working to find engineering solutions to beat the heat
