Take a butchers at Smithfield Nocturne

05 June 2008

Once again, the road around historic Smithfield meat market will be given over to a unique evening of cycle racing and entertainment this Saturday.

The event, called Smithfield Nocturne, follows on from the successful inaugural event last year and will give the public the opportunity to see top British pro cyclists competing  in the Elite Criterium, part of British Cycling's National Circuit series.

Some of the stars racing this Saturday will also be competing in the Beijing Olympics this summer.

Other races will include the Inter Schools Roller Race Competition supported by Transport for London and Go-Ride.

This pilot initiative aims to increase cycling among children.

The qualification events took place earlier this month and finalists will take part in a qualifying competition against each other.

The programme will also feature the Halfords Cycle2Work Folding Bike Race, All Star Celebrity Race, Cycling Weekly Support Race and the City of London Team Challenge.

And it is not just all about the racing.

There will be plenty of attractions to create a festival of cycling for fans and families.

These include the Tour de France roadshow, trade exhibitions, the Procycling stand, classic cars and plenty of bars and restaurants ready to keep the food and drinks flowing.

The event is free to the public and runs between 17:00 and 22:00.

The nearest Tubes are Farringdon or Barbican and bike parking is available around the course.

The Nocturne Series

The success of last year's Smithfield Nocturne attracted interest from other UK cities and a second event will take place in Salford, Manchester in August.

More events are planned in 2009 to create The Nocturne Series with target locations including Glasgow, Birmingham, Brighton and Canary Wharf.
