Transport for London

Alcohol ban comes into force

02 June 2008

Drinking alcohol is now banned on the Tube, buses, Docklands Light Railway, tram services and at Transport for London stations throughout the city.

The ban, which came into force yesterday, also covers carrying open containers of alcohol.

It will be extended to London Overground later this month and is fully supported by the British Transport Police and Metropolitan Police.

Mayor Boris Johnson announced the ban last month.

He said: 'I firmly believe that banning the drinking of alcohol on London's public transport will create a better travelling environment for all Londoners and that if we drive out antisocial behaviour and so called minor crime, then we will be able to get a firm  grip on more serious crime.'
