Transport for London

Alcohol ban on public transport

08 May 2008

From next month, drinking alcohol will be banned on the Tube, buses, Docklands Light Railway, tram services and at stations.

'I'm determined to improve the safety and security of public transport

Mayor of London, Boris Johnson

The plans, announced yesterday by Mayor of London Boris Johnson, come into force on 1 June.

Carrying open containers of alcohol will also be banned.

The Mayor and London's Transport Commissioner, Peter Hendy, unveiled posters advising passengers of the plans.

These have now gone on display across the Transport for London (TfL) network.

The Mayor said: 'I'm determined to improve the safety and security of public transport in London and create a better environment for the millions of Londoners who rely on it.

'I firmly believe that if we drive out so called minor crime then we will be able to get a firm grip on more serious crime.'

The ban is supported by the Metropolitan Police and British Transport Police and, over the next month, TfL will make all necessary legal changes before the ban is introduced.
