Transport for London

Cash or cards accepted

12 July 2007

LONDON Underground (LU) will not be accepting cheques as payment for tickets from July 15.

Payment by personal cheque now represents less than one per cent of all transactions at LU ticket offices, compared with around 87 per cent of non-cash transactions in 1990.

With the growing popularity of Oyster - more than 10 million cards have now been issued - there has been a massive reduction in tickets sold at stations.

LU will be joining an emerging trend among leading high street retailers when it will no longer accept personal cheques as payment.

All major credit and debit cards, travel warrants, company cheques and cash will continue to be accepted, and personal cheques will still be accepted by revenue control inspectors.
