Eco cars on show

04 June 2007

DRIVERS can pick up some eco-friendly advice tomorrow as Trafalgar Square hosts Revolve, an all-day car event.

Transport for London (TfL) is supporting the event as part of its work on Travel Demand Management, a programme to encourage people to travel in a more sustainable way.

The event will show car users how they can take some easy and immediate steps to help reduce CO2 emissions in the capital.

For instance, fuel usage can be reduced by five to 20 per cent simply by accelerating and braking in a smoother way.

Not only will this help drivers save money, it is also equivalent to saving between 250,000 and 1million tonnes of CO2 annually in London.

Throughout the day there will be prototype, eco-friendly vehicles on display and a giant screen will show eco-driving clips.

In addition, people will be able to watch the progress of the Brighton to London Eco Car Rally, which is also being staged by Revolve tomorrow.

Vehicles participating in the Eco Car Rally are expected to reach the finish line in Trafalgar Square between 3.30pm and 6pm, where they will be formally welcomed by Nicky Gavron, London's Deputy Mayor and Chair of the London Hydrogen Partnership.

Nicky Gavron said: 'The Brighton to London Eco Car Rally is a great way to showcase the vehicles of the future.

'I want to demonstrate that new vehicles using alternative fuels and new technologies can offer the potential for lower carbon emissions, and help to prevent runaway climate change.

'CO2 emissions from road transport would fall by as much as 30 per cent if people simply bought the most fuel efficient version of the car they want.'
