Transport for London

Your city. Your say

16 November 2009

LONDON is a city brimming with potential and the Mayor has a vision for its future. He is giving you the chance to shape it.

The Mayor's vision is to make the capital one of the world's greatest cities by supporting its economic development, making sure everyone has access to the opportunities which London offers, and preparing for 1.3million more people over the next 20 years.

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, wants a cycling revolution, more attractive streets, 30 per cent more capacity on the Tube, as well as better information for bus users and passengers when making connections.

rossrail will deliver an east-west link that will bring an extra 1.5million people within an hour's commute of the West End, the City and Docklands.

In short, the Mayor seeks to improve safety and security, quality of life and ensure journeys are made as comfortable and convenient as possible, while making sure that London responds to the challenges of climate change.

To turn his vision into reality, he needs your help.

Last month he published the draft version of his Transport Strategy outlining his proposals.

One of his priorities is to improve the quality of public spaces.

He believes this will encourage a greater sense of community, restore pride in local areas, inspire more walking, and attract businesses and jobs.

Better streets will also encourage greater harmony between pedestrians, vehicles and cyclists.

Why not walk?

What would make you feel safe on the streets?

Would better lighting, more open spaces and improved design encourage you to walk more?

Do you want to see more green areas, and unnecessary street signs and clutter removed?

Do you think priority should be given to easing traffic congestion?

Would well-designed spaces, such as the Millennium Bridge (pictured left), inspire you to explore on foot?

Why not cycle?

If there was one thing that would encourage you to have a go, what would it be?

Would you cycle to work if there were more cycle lanes, bike parking spaces or a cycle hire scheme?

Do you think cycle training should be given more money?

These proposals and more are summed up in a leaflet, called 'Help shape London's future'.
