Transport for London

On track for a cycling revolution

05 November 2009

WITH the recent doubling of cycle parking spaces at Liverpool Street station - and plans for 6,000 hire bikes to grace the capital's streets next year - London's cycling revolution is fast gathering speed.

More than 230 'double-deck' cycle parking spaces have been installed at Liverpool Street station (pictured right) to provide cyclists who want to combine rail travel and pedal power with a secure place to leave their bikes.

It follows the installation of 138 additional cycle parking spaces at Euston station earlier this year.

Kulveer Ranger, the Mayor's transport adviser, said: 'The availability of cycle parking plays a major role in helping people decide whether it is convenient to take to two wheels or not.

'That's why we have provided an extra 11,000 spaces last year and why we are spending £1.5million this year on installing more cycle parking in stations such as Liverpool Street.

By 2012 we aim to have provided 66,000 new cycle parking spacesacross London.'

Among the plans to increase cycling in the city by 400 per cent by 2025, are two new initiatives - the London Cycle Hire Scheme and the introduction of Cycle Superhighways - which launch next summer.

The Cycle Hire Scheme allows people to pick up and drop off bikes at around 400 locations across the nine London boroughs and several Royal Parks within Zone 1.

The scheme will initially offer 6,000 bikes for hire.

Cycle Superhighways will provide a safe, fast and efficient way into central London from the outer boroughs.

By summer 2010, the first two pilot routes, Merton to the City (A24 and A3) and Barking to Tower Gateway (A13) will be complete.
