Lighting up London for Christmas
Not only will they be switched on simultaneously, they will also share the same theme - Disney's A Christmas Carol.
Free street concerts will also take place at each of the three venues: Oxford Circus, Regent Street and St Paul's Cathedral.
Travel information
Due to the sheer number of people expected to travel to see the Christmas lights being switched on, and to avoid overcrowding, Oxford Circus station will be open for exit and interchange only between 3.30pm and 4pm.
From 4pm, the station will close completely and trains will not stop.
It is expected to re-open no later than 7.30pm.
During the closure, passengers are advised to use nearby Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road or Piccadilly Circus stations.
These and other stations in the area will also be busier than usual and local bus services will be diverted and subject to delays.
So please leave extra time for your journey to, and from, the events.
To speed up your journey, and everybody else's, remember to:
- Have your ticket ready when entering or leaving stations
- Stand on the right when using escalators
- Allow people off trains before you board, and move down inside carriages to allow others on behind you
- If you're meeting friends, try to arrange to do so somewhere away from station entrances as it'll make it easier for you and for other passengers to get in and out
Staying safe
British Transport Police want everyone to enjoy the occasion, so here are their 10 top tips to avoid becoming a victim of crime:
- Make sure handbags and pockets are closed or zipped up while waiting for, or travelling on, the Tube
- Pull handbags and bags around to the front of you when waiting on platforms or elsewhere
- Keep your bag and belongings with you at all times and don't lose sight of them
- If you are carrying a wallet, purse, Oyster card, phone or MP3 player, place them in a zipped or buttoned pocket (if you have one) or in a pocket which is difficult to access
- If possible, keep your Oyster card separate from your bag as this will save you from repeatedly opening and closing your bag
- When using your mobile phone, stand in a well-lit area where you can see other people around you. Don't walk around with your MP3 player loosely held in your hand
- Recognise potential situations where you may become a victim of crime (such as in crowded areas) and be aware of who is around you l If you are suspicious of someone, make it known that you are aware of their presence as this could put them off
- When in cafés, coffee shops or restaurants, don't leave your property on the table tops
- Be aware of where CCTV cameras are and try and stay within full view of them if possible
