Transport for London

On the road to fewer traffic jams

19 October 2009

Less congestion and smoother traffic flow is on the way, thanks to Government approval of a scheme which demands that companies needing to dig up roads in the Capital have to obtain a permit.

This will mean Transport for London (TfL) and the boroughs can plan and coordinate the timings of works.

TfL and 18 local borough councils across the capital have been working on the London-wide permit scheme which was submitted to the Department for Transport for approval.

Under the scheme, utility companies which need to dig up roads will have to apply for a permit before they can begin.

Permitting will enable TfL and the London boroughs to plan for utility companies to carry out works at the same time, helping to reduce disruption to road users.

The Mayor of London's adviser on transport, Kulveer Ranger, said: 'The Mayor's war on roadworks is well under way.

'Thanks to his leadership, and his determination for the Secretary of State to follow his lead and approve this scheme, everything is in place for the capital to get permitting.'
