Sights and sounds of the suburbs
London Transport Museum explores the concept of suburbia in a new exhibition opening this Wednesday, October 14.
'Suburbia' will look at how transport has shaped the suburbs and celebrates suburban lifestyle, architecture, design and popular culture.
It combines fun, fact and a little bit of fantasy to celebrate the concept that we collectively love and hate.
Images of domestic architecture and gardens will be shown, alongside pictures of the railway and Underground stations built to serve them.
The tricks of the trade used by the estate agents will be highlighted in a gallery focused on property advertising.
You can also find out how Tube stations got their names and discover how the cartoonists of the day responded to these early marketing techniques.
The exhibition complements the Museum's permanent gallery which tells the story of the early 20th century suburban dream.
Supported by American Express, the exhibition runs until March 2010.
