Working towards a better city
As well as the highly-publicised projects that Transport for London is undertaking, such as the Tube upgrade and Crossrail, there's a huge amount work taking place across the capital which is benefitting Londoners. Here are just some...
Lighting up Wanstead
New lights are shining on Wanstead in a bid to encourage people to walk rather than take the car.
Walking routes and open spaces around the town centre are now well lit and areas have been repaved to make them safer and more pedestrian-friendly. (Woodbine Place, pictured before - middle, and after - right).
Rail benefits coming soon
By June next year, the East London line, now part of London Overground, will run from Dalston Junction to New Cross, Crystal Palace and West Croydon.
The line will allow passengers to travel around the capital by train without having to enter central London.
By February 2011, the line will extend to Highbury & Islington, and 12 trains (increasing to 16 when the line is extended to Clapham Junction), will run every hour in each direction through the centre section, with eight trains an hour running between Highbury & Islington and Dalston Junction.
Building bridges at Hanger Lane
Two 100-year-old bridges on the A406 Hanger Lane are being replaced with new ones which will feature new pedestrian crossings, footways, cycle lanes and new road layouts to improve traffic flow.
Work on Waldegrave Road Bridge and South Bridge should be complete by summer 2011.
