Start walking to reap rewards for children

01 October 2009

MORE than five hundred primary school pupils gathered at Ham House in Richmond upon Thames yesterday to mark the start of this year's WoW (Walk Once a Week) campaign.

WoW was created in 2004 by Transport for London (TfL) in partnership with national charity Living Streets' Walk to School Campaign.

It aims to reduce the number of school journeys made by car by rewarding pupils for walking to school at least once a week.

This year's campaign is set to be the biggest yet with more than 20,000 primary pupils across 18 London boroughs taking part.

Incentives to encourage children to walk to school include rewarding those who walk at least one day a week in any given month with a special WoW badge, and magnifying glasses and wallcharts for their school.

Pupils are also being encouraged to produce seasonal collages from items that they collect on their walk to school such as seeds, leaves and nuts, with prizes awarded next summer for the best entries.

Tony Armstrong, chief executive of Living Streets, said: 'When children are bundled from front door to car door, they miss out on the opportunity to socialise with friends, get to know their community, and burn off some energy before getting their heads down in the books.

'We would love everyone who normally drives the school run to give it a go.

'We think you'll be amazed at how enjoyable a regular walk can be; a chance to spend real quality time together, and reap health rewards for all the family.'
