Why not visit...Piccadilly Circus?

29 September 2009

ONCE said to be the hub of the British Empire, Piccadilly Circus comes into its own at night as the coloured lights flash and people gather beneath the Angel of Christian Charity, commonly known as Eros.

The name Piccadilly originated from a tailor who sold collars called 'piccadills' in the local area back in the 1600s.

Later, in 1879, it was described by Charles Dickens' son as 'the nearest approach to the Parisian boulevard of which London can boast.'

The nearest station, Piccadilly Circus, opened in 1906 and is now used by almost 40million passengers a year.
