Open House celebrates Olympic proportions

15 September 2009

OVER this weekend, 700 buildings in the capital will throw open their doors to the public to mark Open House London.

The event, now in its 17th year, encourages Londoners to explore all corners of the city in a celebration of architecture and design.

Among the many places open to the public will be the Olympic Park, one of the largest construction and engineering projects in Europe.

The Olympic Park is being created on a 2.5sq km site in the Lower Lee Valley and will be at the heart of the London 2012 Games.

Visitors lucky enough to have booked a space on the now fully booked bus tours will get to see an exhibition featuring models of the venues, guided tours and the chance to hear from the people working on the site.

The Brunel Museum in Rotherhithe will also be opening its doors and offering visitors the opportunity to see, for the first time, a new floor level suspended above the railway line at the site to create a riverside theatre.

A new roof garden will also be unveiled.

Author John Graham-Cumming will be signing copies of his new book 'The Geek Atlas' at the museum.

Its grand entrance hall - the birthplace of the Tube network - is one of the 128-world sites featured in his book which illustrate 'where science and technology come alive'.
