Transport for London

Be bike-aware on the roads

15 September 2009

TELEVISION and radio adverts are urging road users to look out for motorcyclists, in a bid to avoid a rise in collisions as Londoners return to work after the summer holidays.

The latest Transport for London campaign warns of an 'optical effect' that can lead to accidents.

The optical effect is caused by the way the brain assesses approaching objects.

Drivers can underestimate the time that small vehicles take to reach them, so risking collision when pulling out in front of approaching motorcycles.

Motorcyclists commuting to work are vulnerable and the majority of casualties occur in the morning and evening.

Last year, there were 4,890 collisions in Greater London involving motorcycles; almost 900 of these resulted in a death or serious injury.

BikeSafe-London and ScooterSafe-London offer rider skills days which aim to educate riders to become safer road users.
