Transport for London

Surface

At Surface Transport, we're responsible for a diverse range of transport activities. As well as operating and improving 580km of London's most important roads - through congestion charging, traffic management and so on - we also oversee a number of different public transport services, including London Bus Network, London Trams, Victoria Coach Station, Dial-A-Ride, Public Carriage Office and London River Services.

The impact of the five-year Investment Programme will be felt across all these areas of activity, and by successfully managing a range of multi-million pound projects, we aim to build on our recent successes and make significant improvements to London's surface transport.

Key improvements

Some of the key improvements we aim to deliver are:

Extension of the Congestion Charge into additional parts of Westminster and Kensington & Chelsea.

Major safety enhancements on the road network, including £149 million of safety improvements to Blackwall, Rotherhithe and Fore Street Tunnels, as well as Westminster Bridge and replacement bridges on the A406 and A40.

Road safety initiatives, designed to dramatically reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured on the roads. The Government and Mayoral road safety target is for figures to be 40% lower by 2010 than they were in the late 1990s.

A 100 per cent accessible bus fleet, due to be in service by the end of 2005. By the end of 2008, all buses are due to be fitted with CCTV and a new bus radio, vehicle location and countdown system, providing customers with better real-time information and improving reliability.

Local travel improvements to town centres, interchanges and residential streets, improving the quality, safety and accessibility of local environments to support local communities.

Walking and cycling improvements totaling £166 million, planned for TfL and borough roads.

A London-wide low emission zone, designed to restrict emissions from lorries (over 3.5 tonnes), buses, coaches and taxis. The zone is planned for 2007.

A sustainable freight distribution project, designed to reduce the impact of freight deliveries in London.

Our project management opportunities offer you the chance to play a key role in some of these planned improvements. And in so doing, you'll be contributing to the wider economic and social life of London, and to the success of the city as a whole.
