Working face-to-face with the public has really built my confidence.
When I first heard about this apprenticeship I was at secondary school doing GCSE's, not sure what I was going to do next. At first I wanted to do drama but didn't get anywhere with it so I was kind of lost. I read the information about the LU Operational Apprenticeship and thought, I can do this but I wasn't sure if I'd get through the assessments. I had to do an application, some tests, a role play and an interview so it was quite tough. I was nervous, especially for the role play but I did study a lot for each stage and this helped me. When I was told I had got the job I was speechless at first. I did feel proud of myself for getting through.
When I started on the apprenticeship I felt like a little fish in a big sea. I didn't know what to expect but was excited to see where it would take me. I've now done my Customer Service Advisor (CSA) training which involves hands-on learning and that's what I like doing, not just sitting in a classroom. I learned to work with customers, first aid, fire safety, and making public announcements. I also went out to busy stations like King's Cross and Liverpool Street and put what I'd learned into practice. Stepping out and working face-to-face with the public was a real challenge but now I've done it I feel I've really built up my confidence.
Now my CSA training is over I'm enjoying my first work placement at Piccadilly Circus station. Right now I just want to get as much experience and skills as I can. One day I'd like to work in signalling or as a manager on stations. I have to rely on myself but I get lots of support and help from the managers and staff I work with so I know I can get there.
I think apprenticeships are a great opportunity for people who want to do more than just sit in a classroom. My advice to anyone interested in this apprenticeship is to make sure you understand what it involves and that it's what you want to do. Then I would say apply and try your hardest because it's a great opportunity.
