The DLR is a key driver of the regeneration ofeast London and the Docklands area. Since 1997,the railway, which is 100 per cent accessibleto wheelchair users, has been operated andmaintained by Serco. In March, TfL awarded thefranchise to Serco for a further seven years aftera competitive bidding process.
In 2005/06, the DLR enhanced its position as the UK's most reliable railway with record figures in the schedule operated and on-time performance categories (see table). Passenger numbers also grew strongly, from 50.1 million in 2004/05 to 53.07 million in 2005/06.
Passenger numbers will continue to grow on theDLR. By 2009, around 80 million passengerjourneys are expected to be made on the DLRnetwork annually.
Among the factors driving the anticipated rise arethe increased use of the recently-opened LondonCity Airport extension; the completion of theWoolwich Arsenal extension and three-car upgradein 2009; and the Stratford International extension, due for completion in 2010.
Completing the London City Airport extension ontime and within budget was among the year's mostnotable achievements. The £140m project involvedlaying 4.4km of new track linking four new stations.Since the extension's opening, journey numbershave been encouraging, with around 10,000customers using the line each weekday.
