About the scheme
The TfL BAME Press Office internship scheme is a diversity initiative targeted at BAME students and recent graduates of African, African-Caribbean, Asian or Chinese origin.
These groups are under-represented regionally, nationally and in our Press Office. The scheme was set up to address this.
Our approach mirrors the view of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR), which has said that practical steps need to be taken to bring about a more ethnically diverse industry.
The TfL Press Office was Highly Commended in the Public Sector Department of the Year category in the 2009 PR Week Awards, and was also a finalist in the Outstanding In-House PR Team category in the 2009 Chartered Institute of Public Relations Excellence Awards.
Industry diversity
In July 2010, the CIPR published its annual State of the PR Profession benchmarking survey.
It revealed that 95 per cent of people working in PR are white, compared with just four per cent who state that they are from a different ethnic group.
Race Relations Act 1976
The TfL BAME Press Office internship scheme is advertised under section 37 of the Race Relations Act 1976.
For the purposes of this advert, BAME refers to people who are of African, African-Caribbean, Asian or Chinese ethnic origin.
