Transport for London

Vehicles

Black cab When you get your first London taxi (black cab), you will also need a taxi vehicle licence from TfL.

To get a licence, your taxi must meet the design standards set out in our Conditions of Fitness (PDF 107KB).

Getting licensed

You will need to have your taxi inspected before we can issue a licence. To book an inspection, please contact Societe Generale de Surveillance (SGS) on 0845 378 2345.

If your taxi passes, you'll get two five-digit licence plates and your taxi will be licensed for 12 months. Once licensed, your taxi will need an annual inspection.

If you are not a licensed taxi driver and are having your taxi licensed for the first time, you will also need to contact us to arrange a criminal records check on 020 7126 1638.
