Taxi markings Planning to become a taxi driver? Want to renew your licence or change your details? Speak to us, the Public Carriage Office, about any licensing matter.

We license all of London's taxi drivers.

Taxi drivers must be UK or EU citizens, or have the right to stay and work in the UK. You must have a licence before you can drive a taxi.

Licence types

With 25,000 licence holders, taxi drivers are part of a large family

You can apply for two licence types - the All London licence or the Suburban licence.

Of the 25,000 taxi drivers in London, over 21,000 hold the All London - or Green Badge - licence and can work throughout Greater London.

The rest are licensed for various suburban areas of London and hold the Suburban - or Yellow Badge - licence.
