Planning applications
Known as referable planning applications, they are automatically submitted to our Land Use Planning (LUP) department by either the Greater London Authority (GLA) or the local planning authority.
Our department supports the GLA in its statutory planning function, by commenting on the transport implications of land use plans and referable planning applications.
We co-ordinate TfL's land use and transport planning work on the 'opportunity areas' identified in the Mayor's London Plan.
We also advise London boroughs on the transport implications of development proposals.

Developments of strategic importance
A development is classed as one of strategic importance if it falls into one of the following three categories:
Read more on the categories in Referable criteria (PDF 45KB) and the Town Country Planning (Mayor of London) Order 2008, which is available from the Office of Public Sector Information.
Application stages
You only need to take action if we ask for further information about transport in your application.
Applications go through a number of stages with Land Use Planning, the GLA and the local planning authority. Those approved by the local planning authority will need to be finally approved or rejected by the Mayor.
One of our LUP case officers will be assigned to your application. Each case officer looks after a geographical area, as listed in Contacts.
Assessment and advice
Our guidance on transport assessment will help you to produce your transport assessment report, which is part of the planning application documents. We also offer pre-planning application advice.
